good morning, america. this morning after the snowstorm and the cold snap, now the flooding. 11 states in the northeast on alert while florida is deluged by a deadly 100-year storm. the northwest bracing for wild weather of its own. dream house destroyed. a family's multimillion dollar home completely gutted. >> i've never actually personally seen anything like that. >> the massive battle to fight the flames and what delayed firefighters from getting to the scene. olympic alert. a travel warning issued for americans attending the winter games in russia. the growing concern this morning about possible terrorist attacks. will u.s. citizens be targeted? pizza gate. new york's new mayor does the

surprise. imagine heading down the slopes and you see something that stops you dead in your track. a big shocker is just ahead. what is behind that question mark? we will show you coming up in the show. >> spoiler alert, it's genuinely scary. another story we're covering this morning, new wrinkles in that massive target data breach. turns out it's even more massive than we thought and overnight, another major retailer revealing a whole new breach. more on that coming up. >> this story continues to grow. the big warm-up across the country. the thaw and heavy rain causing ice jams and deadly flooding. chris knowles is joining us. great to have you. >> thank you, and good morning, bianna. we have a lot going on today. especially on the east coast where we're expecting a lot of rain. first, though to some video in florida where the good people in delray beach, boynton beach, 20 inches of rain. 100-year flood event. two people died in this storm. drowning.

today, florida a little rain as we head back out. a little bit of drying. now the northeast in the path of this rain. big cold front coming through the area but the concern is the rain. copious amounts associated with this storm. maybe 1 to 2 inches before it's all over. in the east coast and there we are, new york all along the i-95 corridor, road and river flooding. ice jams is another issue as we talk later. first the severe weather in the southeast. we will know that there has been severe weather in northeast alabama. we could see strong winds and a few tornadoes associated with this storm. we're going to talk about next some weather in the pacific northwest. a big storm. monster storm out there. dan? >> yeah, they are bracing for as you say a big storm. thank you, chris. more coming up. significant new developments in a chemical spill that forced 300,000 people to stop drinking water out of the taps in their hoes. over night we learned that more

than 700 people have reported symptoms of illness and 70 have gone to the hospital. abc's susan sulny is on the scene in west virginia. susan. >> reporter: good morning, dan. a federal investigation is now under way into the chemical spill into the water here which has put life on hold for so many people. this morning, thousands in west virginia feeling the effects of the spill. more than 700 people in the charleston area have called poison control centers complaining of nausea, vomiting, headaches and rashes. 70 people went to local hospitals. for the 300,000 area residents it's been a frustrating day and a half. overnight fema trucks bringing about a million gallons of clean water for people to direct, bathe, cook and clean. >> i just really am upset because we're trying to find water so we can take a shower have something to drink. >> reporter: the crisis began

when a toxic chemical used to process coal leaked out of a 48,000 gallon storage tank and overflowed into the elk water north of a water treatment plant that provides drinking water for the treatment. >> do not drink it, do not cook with it, do not wash clothes in it. do not take a bath in it. >> reporter: the advisory set off a run in stores emptying shelves across the region. some still concerned using the water before the warning. >> brushed my teeth and washed my face with it so s ththat's k of scaring me. >> this incident is extremely unfortunate and unanticipated and we are very, very sorry for the disruptions to everybody's daily life that it's caused. >> reporter: while the tainted water is not considered deadly some have had stronger symptoms or reactions to it than others. residents are still advised to stay away from the water and there's no word yet on when it will be safe for drinking.

bianna. >> susan, our thanks to you. we turn to the travel alert for americans planning to attend the sochi winter olympics in russia next month. there's been growing concern that terrorists could strike during the games after several recent attacks around the country. abc's tier rit radia is there with more. how worried should americans be? >> reporter: good morning, bianna. there's no specific threat to americans right now but with this latest string of attacks across the region, the fear is that the olympics are the next target. for americans headed to the olympics next month, a new warning to the state department, be on the lookout for terrorism. in a travel alert issued friday, the state department urges americans to be vigilant, especially on public transportation. the warning says there's no sign that americans are being targeted but it follows several attacks near sochi. in october, a suicide bomber detonates aboard a bus in nearby

volgograd. seven are killed. two weeks ago, two more bombings in the same city hitting a train station, another bus killing dozens more. and this past week police found booby-trapped cars, their drivers mysteriously murdered in nearby stavropol. after doku urged his followers to attack. >> typically they're not held close to regions that harbor terrorists. that's a real threat. >> reporter: they're confident russia will be able to pull off a safe olympics. president putin ordered a massive security plan known as the ring of steel. tens of thousands of troop, anti-aircraft missiles and a massive surveillance program. the u.s. says it's ready to help. >> we welcome any efforts and willingness and openness to cooperate around the olympics.

>> reporter: so far they haven't requested any assistance but the fbi is sending agents to the game just in case. some from team america aren't taking any chances. the u.s. ski team has hired a private firm to evacuate them in case of an emergency. and one more warning from the state department. cautioning americans about russia's anti-gay law. anyone thought to be promoting homosexuality could face jail time. >> a couple reasons to worry if you're making that trip. thank you. back at home a developing story with some extraordinary images. look at this. a family watching in horror as their dream home turns to ashes. more than 70 firefighters tried to save the home. but what delayed their arrival at the scene? abc's ryan smith is on the story. ryan, good morning. >> you know, the images are breathtaking. it took years to built leveled by a fire and the plumes of smoke and flames could be seen miles away.

overnight a $4 million mansion destroyed burnt to the ground in indian hill, ohio, a luxury home line in cincinnati. the 10,000 square foot 22-room house built in 2006 is all but gone. despite the devastation, fire officials say no one was injured. according to county records, the home is owned by j.r. and maria decker. their son took to facebook telling friends his family and dogs were safe posting please pray for my family. you will soon see on the news that our home has burned down and there is nothing left of our possessions. >> well involved structure fire. we're in defensive mode. we have a water supply problem. >> reporter: over 70 firefighters arrived at the scene but confusion on the exact address stalled their arrival. by the time they got to the mansion, the blaze had taken over. >> i at first thought the woods weren 0 fire immediately behind my house. >> reporter: the home's lush landscaping had the community

worried that the fire would spread. >> it borders the woods and luckily not a windy day. >> reporter: the scorching flames reached as high as 30 feet. >> i've never actually personally seen anything like that. >> reporter: firefighters put out the fire around 8:00 p.m. but now the once enchanting mansion is nothing more than charred rubble. the cause of the fire is unknown and the state fire marshal is investigating but now the decker family is left trying to piece together what happened. >> such a bizarre reason why they were delayed. >> they went to a field initially thinking it was there because it took up so much space so very difficult situation. >> at least the family is okay. great to have you here. >> thank you. >> thanks for being here. a lot of other news and for that as always we turn to mr. ron claiborne. good morning. >> good morning to you. >> pizza aficionado. >> good morning, everyone. well, the wreckage of a small plane that vaned in idaho has been found with all five people on board dead. the plane went missing in

december, december 1st when silicon executive valley dale smith piloted himself on a trip from oregon on its way to montana. he reported engine trouble 150 miles north of boise and asked for an alternative landing strip before all communication was lost. on board was smith, two of his adult children along with a wife and fiancee of each. the flu is spreading rapidly through the u.s. it's now considered widespread in 35 states up from 25 just a week earlier. this week's flu season has been particularly hard on healthy young adults. 2009 h1n1 appears to be the dominant strain and tamiflu is already in short supply. and larry speakes has died. former first lady nancy reagan said "i was saddened to learn about larry who served ronnie with great loyalty in one of the

toughest jobs in the white house." died in his mississippi home. he was 74 years of age. and take a look at this. police in georgia have released this dash cam video of a wild chase that went on for ten miles reaching speeds up to 130 miles an hour. finally the deputy hits the speeding car from behind to end the chase much the suspects jump out and run off. officers were pursuing three men who they say had just robbed a cell phone store. all three of those suspects were later apprehended. and caught on tape or on camera a would-be purse snatcher messed with the wrong woman in tucson, arizona. watch as he approaches her from behind only to fall down. the 64-year-old -- watch closely here -- you can see she grabs the man by the hood of his sweatshirt and tries to wrestle the purse back away. she then chases him into the parking area. she found her purse later with everything inside. police are still looking for that suspect. so much for bears

hibernating during winter. look at this. this is a bear who would rather hit the ski slopes at lake tahoe. skiers stopped in their tracks, who wouldn't, right when the bear strolled on to the race course at heavenly valley. a local reporter skiing there stopped to snap the picture. no, the bear did not compete, just headed off into the nearby woods. i would ski away, run away, whatever. snowshoe away. >> yeah. thanks, ron. now to the bridge scandal shaking up new jersey governor chris christie's administration and his own potential bid for the white house in 2016. nearly 2,000 pages of documents released friday detailing e-mails and texts surrounding the decision to shut down three lanes on one of the country's most traveled bridges. this, of course, comes after the governor fired two of his top staffers and apologized to citizens saying he had no advance knowledge. abc's jim avila has been on the story from the beginning. >> good morning. the new docks show governor christie's aides were of in the that their politically motivated

traffic jam was crippling ft. lee and jeopardizing public safety but they refused to call it off for an entire workweek in september. the new yorker is mocking him and the tabloids took their shots. but the good news for chris christie is that new documents released by his democratic opponent so far have failed to show any personal involvement in the scandal by the new jersey governor. >> i had no knowledge or involvement in this issue, in its planning or its execution. >> reporter: but those documents and e-mails do show just how the four-day traffic armageddon as the ft. lee mayor called that horrendous jam on the george washington bridge was stopped responding to complaints from ft. lee the new york representative of the bi-state port authority stepped in and threatened to expose the politics behind the revenge closing. "i will get to the bottom of this abusive decision which violates everything this agency

stands for." within a week the scandal became public and governor christie was on the defensive. >> i am responsible. >> reporter: even mocking the notion that he or his administration were behind the backups. >> i worked the cones actually, matt. unbeknownst to everybody i was actually the guy out there. i was in overalls and a hat. >> reporter: joy galicki said she suffered a panic attack when her normal 20-minute commute turned into 90 minutes of frustrating torture. >> he punished the people that not only didn't vote for him but that voted for him. >> so far six new jersey commuters say they suffered messy delays have filed a lawsuit. >> may be mourdockments to come. the u.s. attorney is investigating. this thing is not over. >> it's not over and while the dock thes there have been redacted so some of the things they want to do is get back the blackened parts.

>> stunning new numbers this morning in one of the largest cases of identity theft ever. the target hack attack over the holidays, the giant retailer now saying the number of customers who had their permanent information stolen is actually nearly three times larger than first reported. as many as 110 million people. meanwhile, overnight word of another story hit by hackers so to abc's aditi roy. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, dan. yes, neiman-marcus is saying its custom customers' credit cards were compromised. the company is still trying to figure out how many people were affected. this follows target's announcement that its breach affected more customers than the company originally reported. weeks of target first announced a hacking incident involving 40 million customers more bad news from the retail giant. the company now saying up to 70 million more customers who shopped in stores and online were targeted. their names, address, phone numbers and e-mail addresses stolen.

and breaking overnight, neiman-marcus says it too discovered a credit card breach at its stores last month. a spokesperson says the size and scope is not known. >> the name, address and phone number, they can't do a whole lot with that as far as turning that data immediately into cash. the goal really is to get credit cards which they can immediately turn into cash. >> reporter: security experts say customers can protect themselves by checking their credit card statement. >> i check it every day to make sure there's no transaction i didn't put on there. >> otherwise you could pay for the dinner of an identity theft. >> reporter: as for target analysts say it faces a long road to recovery. >> the big issue for them is their brand is being attacked and people are not trusting their brand and when you lose their trust of the public, you've lost just about everything. >> reporter: target's ceo is offering customers a free year of credit monitoring and theft

protection. >> switching gears to a major crisis enveloping the brand-new mayor of new york city. it involves this scandalous mayor. mayor bill de blasio eating a pizza with a fork and knife. the horror. >> shocking and, of course, tradition holds you're supposed to fold your slice in eat and eat it with your hands. people are outraged across the city. not the way you want to tart your tenure. >> pretty ugly way to start your way in office "nosnew york "dai news" is calling it forkgate and offered that harsh criticism, he was eating it like a tourist. ouch. everybody especially every new yorker knows there is only one way to eat a slice of pizza. duh. >> like new yorkers. >> with my hands. >> reporter: tell to that bill de blasio. please. at good fella as pizza at a

texas. >> listen, i saw eat a taco with a knife and fork and that's bad. i'm from california. that's really bad and -- >> the keeper of the flame of orthodoxy when it comes to pizza eating. we appreciate it. >> the proper way to eat. this is the proper way. let's get over to chris knowles. chris, how do you eat your pizza? >> we in the weather department are eating it by the fold. this is a body built by pizza so we know some pizza in the weather department. we have to talk about unfortunately this monster storm hitting seattle. they know their coffee but this has teeth. a lot of wind associated with it in the higher elevations talking about the cascades. up to two feet of snow, mountain snow by sunday and 50 to 70-mile-an-hour wind gusts associated with this storm that is slamming the pacific northwest and will continue to do so. unfortunately this won't be a drought buster for southern california where they remain dry, warm, though, but dry, something like 4 to 8 inches

below average of where they typically are this time of year. the east coast, we're all about the warmth. yes, it's going to have 1 to 2 inches. new york city, high of 57 degrees. that's 50 more degrees more than that i think since we had monday and tuesday. same thing in atlanta, they were dealing with 6 degrees or so and now in the 60s. across the country, minneapolis, 29, that's warm for you this time of year. same thing for dallas. 66 degrees. so a warm day there. that's what it looks like across the country.

going on a date three weeks ago in south carolina but police have cleared the young man she was with that night. so what happened here? abc's steve osunsami has more. >> reporter: heather elvis' family and friends mounting a search again this morning. teams of volunteers fanning across south carolina in the bitter cold searching by boat, by atv, on foot and horseback. >> no amount of attention, no amount of law enforcement. no amount of work, effort that i do or anybody does is ever going to be enough until she's back home again. >> the 20-year-old disappeared after a date in the early morning hours of december 18th. police say the young man she was with had nothing to do with her disappearance and say they have no person of interest. >> there's no clear indication of why she left the apartment again after the date. there's no obvious signs of anything that occurred at the apartment. >> reporter: earlier that night her date was teaching her how to

drive a stick shift in this mall parking lot and called a friend to say how well the date went. her father says she sent him a text. this was it picture her driving the car that night. >> for years i'm trying to teach her how to drive one and i didn't have the patience to do it and now she was doing it on her own. i'm proud of it. >> reporter: the next day when she failed to show up for work they found her abandoned car at a boat landing not far from her parents' home. >> you should take a moment to hold their family and tell them they love them because sometimes it's not enough to just assume that they know. >> reporter: they've kept the christmas tree up and her presents are waiting for her. for "good morning america," steve osunsami, abc news, atlanta. >> hope they do find her. an update of the morning's

top stories in half hour with ron. >> hi again. good morning, everyone. we begin with the thaw as the weather heats up in much of the country melting ice and snow are the new threat to cause widespread dangerous flooding in florida. two people were killed as a result of the rising waters in palm beach county. 22 inches of rain caused flash flooding there. and changes are coming to the health care.gov website. they will drop cgi, the contractor that built most of it when the contract expires next month replaced by the consulting firm accenture plagued by delays and error messages when it first launched. most of those have since been fixed. a fiery scene in north carolina as a gas line explodes shooting flames 75 feet in the air. fire officials say a major gas line ruptured triggering that fire. area businesses as well as residents had to be evacuated but luckily no one was injured. finally, a pilot in new

zealand managed to survive a plane crash not once but twice with the same plane. watch as he attempts a takeoff. it winds up crashing in the surf and flipping over. earlier the same day same plane same pilot crash landed on the same beach. neither the pilot or co-pilot were hurt. my permanent advice if you crash twice in the same plane the same day and survive take the rest of the day off. of course, we say in italian. [ speaking a foreign language ] time for the weather and over to chris knowles. >> a little bit of breaking weather. tornadoes and now already a tornado warning in northwest georgia so we'll take a look there. keep on the lookout for that as we watch the cold front come through the east coast bringing us a lot of rain. maybe 1 to 2 inch as long the eastern seaboard before it's all over and cold weather still in western new york. i want to take you to some videotape of niagara falls. beautiful honeymoon spot but a lot of icing going on right there as you can see.

the temperature there very cold in the niagara river another place where we're looking for ice jams that could lead to flooding when we get the thawing snow and rain coming through. back to the maps taking a look at some fog this morning, as well in places like charlotte or charleston rather, three miles visibility there and under a mile in tallahassee. a foggy morning for a lot of people. west coast we're looking at that winter storm. 2 feet of mountain snow in the middle part of the country, dry and warmer than average day, warmer than average too on the east coast but we're looking for a lot of rain with that, up to 2 inches of rain and the fog goes along with that. that's a look at your forecast across the nation. >> and this weather report brought to you by walmart.
